It's wonderful to see precious metals showing tremendous strength this morning as the world enters into a death-spiral round of currency devaluations. All fiat currencies have begun to circle the drain.

Forum: Precious Metals

Air Rifle: an essential tool

My family has two air rifles: a Gamo Whisper and a Diana RWS34 Panther, both in .177 caliber. Both are excellent guns. For walking-around hunting I would choose the Gamo; it is much lighter and the lighter weight helps keep the scope cross-hairs on target. Each gun is mounted with a 4X32 scope (you have to get an air-rifle scope as the recoil of an air-rifle is unique and will destroy an ordinary scope in no time). The air rifles are used to periodically kill marauding squirrels that get in our fruit trees. These rifles are extremely accurate and a well-placed shot on a squirrel (or any other small animal) results in an instant, humane death. We use Beeman Kodiak Match Extra Heavy pellets.
The nice thing about these guns is that one merely has to cock them in order to propel the projectile; no compressor/scuba tank is needed. Plus, pellets are extremely inexpensive vs. other types of ammo, and the sound from shooting these air rifles is very quiet (they can be used in an urban setting if needed w/o upsetting the neighbors). For survival hunting of small game these air rifles can not be surpassed in my opinion.

Forum: Survival

What a wonderful website! I especially like the streaming news feeds and the consolidation of topics (e.g., precious metals, firearms, survival) of interest to those of us expecting a collapse of global fiat currencies.

In addition to bullion and art, I recently began collecting antique American percussion revolvers -- in other words, trading Federal Reserve Notes for anything tangible and of value. I can't afford the really high-value items, but have tried to purchase artworks and revolvers that should retain good value as currencies inflate.

My main fear is that the government, as the debt situation becomes more pronounced, will institute taxation policies that erode current safety zones like the estate tax. Currently it's $1M in assets. There's talk it might be $3.5M next year -- or zero. No one knows. I suspect zero before too long. I can envision a situation where, upon death, one's assets in bank and stock accounts would be added up and nailed with a 50% (or more) estate tax.

I wonder if there are others out there with novel ideas of how to convert paper money to assets that one's heirs can enjoy, barter, or sell free and clear of onerous government taxation.

Porky

Forum: Precious Metals

Preferred type of silver for barter

I think the 1 ounce rounds and 90% silver coins (junk silver) would probably be the best type of silver in a barter situation. Some people think that silver shot is the way to go...I disagree. I don't think most people know what it is and the fact it is not stamped with it's weight/purity would discourage trading.
Forum: Precious Metals

This is a tough call...pistol or revolver, knockdown power vs. # of rounds, ability to conceal, etc. I'm torn between my .357 revolver, my 1911 .45 and my Glock Model 19. A couple of years ago I would have chosen my .45 any day of the week...but now since newer, more devastating 9mm +P (or +P+) ammo has come out, I am leaning towards the Glock, especially since it holds 15+1 AND you can slap in the bigger magazines.
The .357 is a nasty round, but it has a significant muzzle flash (and I know the round is notoriously loud), and the last thing I want to be at night is blind and deaf if an intruder is in the house!

Forum: Firearms
